What is a tessellation?
A tessellation is the repetition of a pattern over and over again. The image to the left shows a tessellation created using the repetition of a cube. Tessellations can sometimes create optical illusion, making the image appear to be 3 dimensional (making them seem like the images are coming to life.)
Tessellations are not always just created by humans, there are tessellations that are found in nature too. For example, a brick sidewalk, a honeycomb, cracks in the surface of the earth. They're all tessellations!
Not all tessellations are man made, they are also found in nature! The image below shows a honeycomb. The honeycomb is a tessellation because it uses the repetition of circles to form a pattern.
